Recognition of prior seniority
Last updated : May 13, 2026
Article 25 of the CCT SAS 2025 explains how your years spent with a previous employer are recognised at the time of hiring in order to set your starting seniority grade ("notional start of career").
The three cases of recognition
Seniority is credited in whole months, and each month during which you worked more than 15 days counts as a full month.
- 100% — Periods in the same family of professions and the same career, with:
- the same employer, or
- an employer falling within the scope of the CCT SAS, or
- an employer belonging to the Fédération des Hôpitaux Luxembourgeois (FHL), or
- an employer in the Luxembourg public sector or equivalent.
- 50% — Periods in the same profession, but with an employer not falling within the above categories. Fractions of a month resulting from this division are not taken into account.
- 0% — All other periods (different profession, undocumented experience) are not considered.
24-year cap for periods outside the scope of application
Periods of work in the profession outside the scope of the CCT SAS are recognised at 50% up to a maximum of 24 years. Beyond that, they are not recognised for the calculation of seniority.
In concrete terms: if you have 30 years of experience outside the scope of application, only the first 24 years are taken into account (24 × 50% = 12 effective years of recognised seniority).
How this is reflected in the calculator
- The "SAS contract" box for each period corresponds to the 100% categories (ticked) or the 50% categories (unticked).
- The "Certificate" box indicates whether you hold supporting evidence (attestation, contract, pay slip) for that period. Without a certificate, the period is not counted.
- The 24-year cap is applied automatically to the sum of all periods outside the scope of application.
Exceptions and transitional rules
Since 1st January 2025, exceptions to these principles remain possible if they are the subject of a written request by registered letter from the employee to their employer.
Recognitions of seniority prior to 1st January 2025 remain applicable and cannot be the subject of any appeal or reassessment.
