The authorisation to practise a healthcare profession in Luxembourg

Whether you are a nurse or a care assistant, and whatever the country where you obtained your diploma, practising the profession in Luxembourg requires an authorisation to practise issued by the Minister of Health. It is the final step of the journey, after any diploma recognition.

The conditions

  • hold a Luxembourg diploma, a European diploma conforming to Directive 2005/36/EC or a recognised foreign diploma (see the dedicated articles for EU nurses, non-EU nurses and care assistants);
  • have a command of Luxembourgish, French or German — in practice a B2 level in French or German is required (see the language requirements);
  • offer the necessary guarantees of good repute (criminal record) and of physical and mental health.

The file

  • valid identity document;
  • copy of the diploma and, where applicable, of the recognition decree;
  • extract of the criminal record less than 3 months old;
  • medical certificate less than 3 months old;
  • proof of language competency;
  • sworn translations for documents in a foreign language.

Submission, cost and follow-up

The application is submitted online via MyGuichet.lu (with or without LuxTrust authentication). The fee is 75 €, payable online, non-refundable if the application is rejected. The decision is notified by post.

Points to watch

  • Lapse: the authorisation lapses if you do not practise in Luxembourg within 2 years of its issuance, or after a break in activity of more than 2 years. It can be renewed upon request.
  • Reintegration internship: if you have not practised for more than 5 years, a reintegration internship (theoretical and practical part, under supervision) is mandatory before resuming.
